States of Faith: the Relics, 2003-2013, Mixed media castings in paper, glass, silver and crayon wax
This is a series of cast sculptures of familiar Christian icons, the Virgin Mary and Jesus. The Relics have undergone several states of physical transformation. The initial mold impressions were taken from plastic dollar store night lights and then cast in a paper fiber that caused the icons to distort into decaying, bone like forms or relics. The features of the icons are twisted and pulled as they have become ghosts of their original form. Recast in materials such as glass, silver and crayon the icons are transformed into various meanings related to each media. The Silver Relic begins as something shiny and pure, but overtime it tarnishes and it’s impurities are magnified. The Crayon Relics are still distorted yet now vibrant in color and made of a material that can be used to draw and create, but in doing so will also ultimately be worn away. Each Relic captures the dualities of faith, a conviction that is enduring although continuously transforming states throughout the course of life.
